Recognizing A Visionary Who Helped Build Shared Interest
Robert Zevin understood that South Africa’s democratic transition also created an opportunity to build a more inclusive and equitable economy. While serving on the Advisory Board of the Fund for a Free South Africa, Robert helped pioneer its evolution from supporting the anti-apartheid movement to advancing the promise of a new South Africa. He was among the architects of a socially responsible investment fund designed to unlock capital for Black emerging entrepreneurs and cooperatives. That vision became Shared Interest. Robert went on to serve as an early Chair of Shared Interest’s Board of Directors and later as a member of its Board of Advisors. He helped refine our guarantee strategies, strengthen our financial approach, expand investment networks, and shape the systems that allowed Shared Interest to grow its impact. Throughout that journey, Robert was also a teacher, mentor, thoughtful advisor, advocate, and source of encouragement to leaders working at the intersection of finance and justice. His influence extended well beyond institutions. He encouraged people to think independently, pursue bold ideas, and build new pathways for impact.
The Courage to Invest in Possibility
One of Robert’s most enduring lessons was that meaningful change requires the courage to invest in possibility. He understood that innovative finance works best when paired with disciplined analysis, strong partnerships, careful stewardship, and continuous learning. Robert encouraged Shared Interest to strengthen its approach to assessing opportunities, supporting entrepreneurs, working with financial institutions, expanding technical assistance, and building the financial reserves necessary to sustain long-term impact. That philosophy helped shape Shared Interest’s approach. For over 33 years of issuing guarantees, all Shared Interest investors have been repaid in full and on time, while our work benefited more than 2.3 million low-income Black South and Southern Africans. Robert helped demonstrate the potential of entrepreneurs and communities when capital, confidence, and opportunity come together. His work helped encourage commercial financial institutions to expand lending and helped entrepreneurs strengthen businesses, support families, create opportunity, and contribute to more equitable communities.
Carrying His Work Forward
The Robert Zevin Visionary Fund will extend this legacy by supporting Shared Interest’s work to unlock capital, expand economic opportunity, and strengthen locally led enterprises across Southern Africa. The Fund will advance principles that Robert championed throughout his life: Courageous Capital Mobilizing investment and guarantees to expand opportunity for entrepreneurs, enterprises, and communities with the vision and potential to grow.
