Help an Acton Senior Meet an Urgent Insurance Deadline

Cancer treatment has made this work impossible to complete alone.

An Acton senior undergoing cancer treatment has been directed by their insurance company to complete critical wildfire-mitigation and fire-safety work by a specific deadline or risk losing their homeowners insurance coverage.

The project includes trimming six trees and repairing essential components of the property’s 6,500 gallon water tank, including the fire alarm bell and overflow valve. Each part of this work is important to improving the property’s wildfire readiness and addressing the insurer’s concerns.

The resident is physically unable to complete the work and cannot afford to hire professional crews. The money the homeowner originally set aside for the tree trimming was instead needed to replace the home’s failed water-pressure pump.

Without community support, the tree work and critical fire-water tank repairs may remain unfinished when the insurance deadline arrives.

Your Support Will Help Complete the Work

Your donation will:
 - Professionally trim six trees and remove hazardous branches
 - Clear dry and overgrown vegetation
 - Remove and dispose of accumulated branches and combustible debris
 - Safely clear pepper-tree debris from the roof
 - Inspect and document the roof’s condition for the insurer
 - Replace the fire-water tank’s overflow-control valve
 - Reattach, inspect and test the tank’s alarm bell

These are not cosmetic improvements. Each part of the project contributes to protecting the home, maintaining its fire-water supply and helping the resident respond to the insurance company’s requirements.

Six Trees Need Professional Trimming
Six trees surrounding the home need professional trimming. Hazardous branches, overgrown vegetation and accumulated debris must also be removed to improve defensible space and reduce combustible material near the structure.
Acton Firewise has received a $1,600 quote for the six-tree project.

The Roof Must Be Cleared and Documented
Pepper-tree debris has accumulated heavily in a roof valley. During its inspection, the insurance company raised concerns about possible missing shingles. The debris may be obscuring the roof’s actual condition. The area must be safely cleared, inspected and photographed so accurate documentation can be provided to the insurer.

The Fire-Water Tank Needs Repair
The property’s 6,500-gallon fire-water tank also needs repair. Water has been visibly overflowing from the top of the tank, and the overflow-control valve needs to be replaced. The tank’s alarm bell is hanging loose and must be properly reattached, inspected and tested. Maintaining this system is important because the tank provides water reserved for fire protection.

A Direct and Visible Difference
Acton Firewise has completed wildfire-risk-reduction projects for seniors and other vulnerable neighbors who could not safely perform or afford the work themselves.

We will share written estimates, photographs and project updates as the work progresses so donors can see how their contributions are being used. Every contribution will move this project closer to completion.

If you cannot donate today, sharing this campaign may help us reach someone who can.

Help complete the work.

If contributions exceed the amount needed to complete this resident’s approved work and related project expenses, the remaining funds will support Acton Firewise’s next wildfire-mitigation and cleanup assistance project for another resident in need.
