Beyond The Green
In order to follow our spiritual mission, Wesley United Methodist Church is replacing 8,000 Sq. Ft. of lawn with a drought tolerant landscape to improve our physical footprint, conserve water, & create a beautiful green space for the surrounding community!
Why Your Support Matters
The founder of Methodism, John Wesley (1703 - 1791), preached many sermons on ecology and environmental stewardship. He emphasized the importance of loving all of God’s creation which includes caring for the environment as an expression of love for God and neighbor.
In response to the water shortage in California, AB 1572 was passed and prohibits the use of potable water for irrigating grass that is purely decorative. Recently, the United Methodist Conference passed Resolution 1211, titled, “Protection of Water”. It calls for churches to minimize and make sustainable choices in water use. To be in compliance with the state and follow our spiritual mission, Wesley UMC is replacing 8,000 Sq. Ft. of lawn with a drought tolerant landscape.
We are asking for $16,000 to help to fund, Beyond the Green, Wesley UMC. Your donations will provide:
* The clearing of 8,000 Sq.Ft. of non functional grass
*The purchase and planting of drought tolerant plants and trees
*The installation and maintenance of drip irrigation
*Provide a beautiful and welcoming space for the community!
Wesley UMC of Fresno is a welcoming, diverse church community open to all including our LGBTQ siblings and soon to welcome our Hispanic Ministries congregation. For approximately 60 years, Wesley UMC has been at the center of social justice in our community and the world. Wesley UMC was the 2nd church in the nation to become a Reconciling Congregation.
Currently, we support UMCOR, United San Joaquin, PFLAG, Students in Service, weekly food bag giveaways, a Community Food Pantry, Base Camp (Thursday night meal), The Pink Cow Thrift Store, The Boys and Girls Club, a KaBoom Playground, joint ownership with the City of Fresno for a park on our grounds, The Quiet Corner (Meditative outdoor space), a labyrinth and a small free library will be coming soon.
