Komakali 38K: the next challenge

On Saturday, October 3, Juan will race Komakali 38K from Parque Barrancas in Divisadero, Chihuahua. The course has about 1,600 m of climbing and an 8 hour 30 minute cutoff. Finishers earn 2 Running Stones in the UTMB 50K category. This race does not provide direct OCC qualification. It is Juan’s next test as he builds mountain experience toward a future OCC.

Meet Juan Zurita Victoria

Juan Zurita Victoria during a trail training session in Oaxaca.

Juan is a trail runner from Magdalena Apazco, Oaxaca. Komakali is a major step up in distance and climbing, so his job is simple: train consistently, arrive prepared, and race responsibly. Oax Sport will review his preparation and result before choosing his next UTMB event. His long-term objective remains a future OCC at UTMB Mont-Blanc.

Why Komakali matters

Komakali crosses Copper Canyon terrain from Parque Barrancas in Divisadero. Its 38 km and approximately 1,600 m D+ will test Juan’s endurance, climbing, and race management. Completing the race awards 2 Running Stones. They may improve his chances in a future UTMB draw, but they do not guarantee entry.

Juan Zurita Victoria leads a group training run on a misty forest trail in Oaxaca.

What your donation supports

The $750 goal is a pooled budget for registration, round-trip travel from Oaxaca, transportation to Creel and Divisadero, lodging, food, hydration, and race-day logistics. Actual costs may vary. Oax Sport will use donations where they are most needed, keep supporting records, and report how the funds were used.

Accountability through Oax Sport

Oax Sport Inc. is a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity, EIN 86-3407818. We will manage the donations, document eligible expenses, and publish updates on Juan’s preparation, race result, and use of funds. If Juan cannot race, or if money remains after Komakali expenses, the balance will support his next eligible UTMB event. Donations will not be represented as payment for an OCC place.
