Opening the Door to a Lifetime on the Water
Scientific data indicates that Black children are 5-7 times more likely to drown in a swimming pool than their white counterparts. Making Waves is Outdoor Afro's life-saving water safety initiative that addresses this disparity by providing access to beginner swim lessons.
More than learning to swim, participants gain the confidence to build lifelong relationships with water, opening the door to recreation, wellness, and deeper connections with nature.
Creating Lifelong Connections to Nature
The Volunteer Program equips volunteers to carry the Outdoor Afro mission forward in their own communities, leading year-round outings that welcome people of all ages into nature nationwide.
From a first hike or camping trip to paddling, birding, or fishing, these experiences build the confidence and skills that inspire lifelong connections to the outdoors. Together, we're creating healthier communities where everyone feels they belong in nature.

Every donation helps move the mission forward.
$200 Provides life-saving beginner swim lessons for one person through Making Waves.
$300 Equips one Outdoor Afro Volunteer with certifications and advanced outdoor leadership training, preparing them to safely lead hundreds of people into nature each year.
$400 Provides life-saving beginner swim lessons for an entire family.
$25,000 Supports one Making Waves community collaborator for a full year, expanding access to swim instruction and water safety where it's needed most.
$100,000+ Strengthens Outdoor Afro's national network, helping us train leaders, expand programs, develop innovative technology, and connect more communities to the health and healing power of nature.
