More about our legacy match:

On March 27, 1951, the organization that would become Lawrence Humane was officially chartered, beginning a journey that has spanned generations of people and animals in Douglas County.

Like many meaningful things, it started simply. In those early days, the shelter was just a small house on Indiana Street where local police brought homeless animals they found around town. Volunteers cared for them as best they could, offering food, warmth, and the hope of a new home. The need was great, but so was the community’s compassion. Soon after the organization was founded, four acres of land were purchased on East 19th Street - where Lawrence Humane still stands today - and in 1958 the first true shelter building was constructed.

Over time, the organization grew alongside the community. In 1963, the Douglas County Humane Society adopted the name “Lawrence Humane Society” to better reflect its mission. Just a few years later, in 1966, Lawrence Humane gained national recognition when both the American Humane Association and the Humane Society of the United States named it, “the best in the nation as a small shelter.” Even then, it was clear that something special was happening here in Lawrence.

Lawrence Humane has always been more than a building. It is a community of people united by the belief that the bond between people and pets is sacred and worth protecting. As we celebrate this 75-year legacy, we are also looking ahead to the future. And thanks to a very special partner, we have an incredible opportunity to make an even greater impact! We hope you'll join us in during this 75 year legacy match that helps ensure Lawrence Humane can continue saving lives for generations to come.
