Casey's Story
Casey’s journey began at HSSW after arriving as a stray, full of energy and curiosity—but struggling with the stress of the shelter environment. The noise, movement, and routine changes were overwhelming for him, and it was clear that Casey would need patience, understanding, and time to succeed.
Thanks to consistent care from HSSW staff and volunteers, Casey received the support he needed, including behavioral care to help reduce his anxiety while we worked to understand what kind of home would suit him best. Rather than rushing him into the wrong situation, Casey was given the time and structure he needed to wait for the right match.
That match came when an adopter looking for an energetic, intelligent dog—one who could thrive with an active lifestyle—met Casey and immediately saw his potential.
Today, Casey is thriving in his new home. With daily training, outdoor adventures, and plenty of mental stimulation, his energy has become one of his greatest strengths. His adopter describes him as incredibly smart, endlessly entertaining, and a lovable goofball who is equally happy learning new tricks or relaxing at home after a busy day.

RV Cat Rescue
The rescue of 31 cats and kittens began on a dangerously hot summer afternoon, when an abandoned RV was discovered in Clark County. Inside were dozens of cats—crowded together, frightened, and in urgent need of help. Local animal welfare partners contacted the Humane Society for Southwest Washington immediately, knowing HSSW is the first call when a situation becomes overwhelming.
When the cats were safely brought to our Vancouver campus, our team quickly assessed their needs. Despite the conditions they had endured, many were remarkably social and affectionate. Every cat required spay or neuter surgery, several were treated for upper respiratory infections, and one mother arrived with tiny newborn kittens. Two other pregnant cats later gave birth while in our care.
Providing medical treatment, daily care, and a safe place to rest for so many animals at once is no small task. But because of consistent support from Best Friends Monthly Supporters, HSSW was ready to respond without hesitation—offering each cat the time and care they needed to heal.
This wasn’t an isolated incident. Just weeks earlier, HSSW responded to a similar case involving 52 cats rescued from another RV. Situations like these can develop quickly, often with people who care deeply about their animals but find themselves overwhelmed.
Because of Best Friends, every one of these cats received compassionate care and the chance to move forward toward a loving home.
